History of Tallahassee

The Tally thrives on history!  History is visible in every nook and cranny of the city!

Tallahassee was first settled by the Apalachee Indians in the early 16th century, and later by the Seminoles. It is named for “old fields” which indicates it agricultural roots. Many Spanish missionaries came to Tallahassee in 17th and 18th century and laid out many popular missions, including the Mission San Luis de Apalachee, which is now a historic site.

The United States took away Florida from Spain in 1821. In 1824, Tallahassee was chosen as the capital of Florida City because of its central location between two main cities- Pensacola and St. Augustine. Tallahassee was a main area of focus during the Civil War. It became an antebellum town. It was the only state capital not taken by the Union armed forced during the Civil War. Tallahassee is now a college town and center for research and government.

It is a great spot to relax under the sun, take in the beauty of nature and enjoy with family and friends.

City Hall Art Gallery: Peruse the art collections by local and regional artists at the City Hall Art Gallery. It features more than 50 pieces of art and several temporary exhibits are also on display, ranging from paintings and drawings to sculptures by local and regional artists. 

Florida Governor’s Mansion: Tour the Florida Governor’s Mansion  via conducted tours. With elegant and classy interior and antiques collection of eighteenth and nineteenth century, this is a beautiful spot to see. Inside are the exhibits and collections crafted by several local artists.

Florida State Capitol: Take in the sweeping view of Tallahassee from the twenty-two floor observatory of Florida State Capitol . Inside are several art displays, portraits and other exhibits that highlight the political history of the state.

Goodwood Museum & Gardens: Goodwood Museum & Gardens is a 1840s antebellum plantation house featuring original furniture, art, textiles, porcelain, glassware and personal items of the Croom family who established it. 

Museum of Florida History: Museum of Florida History features the native culture, heritage, wildlife and nature through exhibits from the prehistoric times to the 20th century.  

Tallahassee Automobile Museum: Tallahassee Automobile Museum  houses more than 150 historic, beautiful and unique automobiles from across the world, including Batmobiles, pedal cars, die-hard cast toy cars, motorcycles, artifacts and other memorabilia.  

Lake Ella: Lake Ella is located in central Tallahassee and offers visitors an opportunity to skate, walk, feed the turtles, geese and ducks in the lake, indulge in some shopping, people-watch or simply relax.

Lake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State ParkLake Jackson Mounds Archaeological State Park includes earth temple mounds, nature trails, public plaza, and residences of artisans in the area. It offers opportunities for nature and wildlife viewing.

People and Culture of Tallahassee

Tallahassee is a multicultural city. Influences of Spanish, English, Indians and French can be seen all around. Also, it is a college town and political center. There are lots of schools of higher learning here. Several political makers and shakers are seen in the city when the legislature convenes. 

The city, otherwise, has a laid-back vibe and a slower pace than other parts of the state. It is a friendly town where every person at least say “hello” to every person.
